Why waiting until life "calms down" isn't working
Spoiler Alert: things are never going to get less busy!
We’ve all said it. “Once this week is over, things will calm down,” or “After school is out for the summer, we’ll have more time.”
It seems like it makes sense. Our schedules are so full, that looking ahead to a less busy week feels like it’s less busy. But what usually happens is that time gets filled up just as quickly.
My kids just got out of school for the summer, and objectively it seems like I should have more time… I won’t be driving to and from school, extracurriculars are ending, no more homework (yay!).
But in its place will be Vacation Bible School, playdates, trips to the waterpark, vacations Up North, and the general chaos that is being home all day with four kids.
The biggest lie keeping so many moms stuck when it comes to prioritizing ourselves and our health is thinking that there will be a better time to start.
I’m here to tell you with so much love that this isn’t true. Life isn’t going to calm down. Things will never be less busy. There will never be an ideal time to start.
The problem? Life never actually calms down.
The hard truth is that one busy season simply rolls into the next. Sure, we made it through Maycember. But now we have all the new summer things ahead. And even if this season brings fun things, there still isn’t magically more time on the calendar. Call it mom math, but it seems that it always adds up to us having no extra time.
What I see in the women I work with
When we plan to focus on ourselves when things slow down, we’re putting ourselves on the backburner. Not because we don’t think it’s important, but because as moms, we’re used to prioritizing everything else for our kids and family before ourselves.
And then, we can become resentful. Especially if you’ve been carrying around the extra baby weight for 5+ years just waiting to have more time to focus on yourself.
It’s not that you’re lazy, unmotivated, or lacking self-discipline. You’re waiting for a version of life that doesn’t exist.
The question that changes everything
Instead of walking around wondering, “When will life calm down enough for me to focus on my health?” I’m challenging you to ask a new question instead.
What if you simply asked yourself,
“What if I stopped waiting for life to calm down and started building a healthier life right now?”
These two questions create completely different outcomes.
In the first scenario, we’re passively waiting for our circumstances to change. As we’ve already seen, they probably won’t. At least not in a way that would give you any more time to focus on your health the way you imagine you “should” be able to.
With the second question, everything changes. Instead of waiting for your circumstances to change, you start looking for ways to move forward within the life you have right now.
The women who make progress aren’t waiting
Because here’s the thing. The women I see who make progress aren’t the ones waiting for things to change. They’re creating that change themselves. (Or with my help!)
You don’t need a new life or even a whole new routine.
The women making progress simplify things and work with the reality of the life they have right now. They stop waiting and decide to start taking action, even if it’s messy and imperfect.
A challenge for this summer
Alright, you had to see this coming. I have a challenge for you this summer! I challenge you to think about your biggest goal and take the next step to actually start on it.
And if you’re overwhelmed or not really sure where to start, I have good news for you! My free Summer Reset Strategy Sessions are now open.
I’m offering a limited number of these personalized, one-on-one 45-minute sessions where we’ll take a look at what’s been working, what hasn’t, and what may actually be standing between you and the results you want.
Most women come to this call thinking they need more willpower, a better meal plan, or more motivation, but more often than not, we discover the real issue is something completely different.
You’ll walk away with:
• A deeper understanding of what’s actually keeping you stuck
• New insights into why your past efforts haven’t produced the results you want
• A simpler, more sustainable path toward feeling better this summer
So, if you were hoping this summer would finally be the summer you lose the weight, get your energy back, and stop starting over every Monday, I’d love to talk with you!
With grace,
Andrea
